Executive Board

Paul GrodPresident - Paul Grod (Toronto)
As a volunteer, Paul has served as the National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress since October 2007.  Prior to his election as President, Paul served as the Congress’ Vice President and member of the Board of Directors since 2001.  During that period Paul also chaired and served on a number of UCC National Committees including Justice, Internment and Canada Ukraine. 

Paul has a strong connection to his ancestoral homeland and has travelled there on numerous occassions.  First as a student organizer, working with the Students Union of Ukraine to encourage young Ukrainians to vote and become involved in the political process.  Later Paul coordinated a group of international experts working for the Council of Advisors to the Parliament of Ukraine.  Most recently he organized and lead 500-person and later 150-person missions to observer the 2004 Presidential (Orange Revolution) and later the 2006 Parliamentary elections in Ukraine.  Paul has been involved in a number of community organizations including the Ukrainian Youth Association, Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union (past President), Canada Ukraine Chamber of Commerce, Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Association and the League of Ukrainian Canadians.

Paul is President & CEO of Rodan Energy, a leading provider of energy management and smart grid solutions.   Prior to founding Rodan, Paul was a corporate and investment banker with CIBC World Markets and most recently practiced corporate finance and M&A law with Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, one of Canada’s largest national law firms.   

He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and holds a Bachelor of Political Science degree, a Bachelor of Laws degree and a Master of Business Administration degree.  Paul is married and has four young children.

 

Alexandra ChczijVice President – Alexandra Chyczij (Toronto)
A native of Toronto, Alexandra attended the University of Toronto (St. Michael's College), where she completed an Honours B.A. in Political Science in 1978. She continued her studies at the University of Windsor, where she obtained her Bachelor of Laws in 1981. She was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1983. Alexandra practiced law (civil litigation) for ten years before joining The Advocates' Society as Executive Director in 1993. Alexandra is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Canadian Society of Association Executives. Alexandra has many years of experience in the management of not-for-profit voluntary associations.

Alexandra's involvement in the Ukrainian Canadian community began at an early age when she joined Plast Ukrainian Youth Association, where she served as a counselor, camp administrator and most recently, on the National Organizing Committee for the 2007 World Youth Jamboree (UMPZ) which brought together 1,000 youth from nine countries. As a member of the award-winning Vesnivka Women's Choir (1968 – 1988), Alexandra had numerous opportunities to perform before and meet Ukrainian communities throughout Canada, the USA, Europe and South America.

From 1985 - 1990, Alexandra served on the Board of Directors and as Vice-President of the Ukrainian Canadian Professional & Business Association of Toronto. During this time, she was also a member of UCC National's Civil Liberties Commission and later was one of the founding members of the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association. More recently, Alexandra has been a member of the Justice Committees of UCC National and UCC-Toronto Branch. Alexandra has appeared before numerous Standing Committees, advocating for changes to Canada's Emergencies Act and for amendments to the Citizenship Act and the abolition of Denaturalization & Deportation proceedings.

Alexandra served as Vice-President of the Association of Ukrainian Canadian Jurists from 1993 – 1996 and participated in International Conferences of this Association in Kyiv (1991 & 1994) and Yalta (1996).

Alexandra has twice served as an International Election Observer in Ukraine: in 1994, as a member of the Canadian Parliamentary delegation which included MP's Jesse Flis and Walt Lastewka , and again in 2004, during the Orange Revolution, where she was one of the team leaders in Dnipropetrovsk.

Alexandra has an avid interest in federal politics, having served on the Executive of the Etobicoke-Lakeshore Federal Liberal Riding Association and as an Executive Member of the Borys Wrzesnewskyj Election Campaign in 2004.

Alexandra is the mother of 17 year old Kassandra Luciuk who is a dance major at the Etobicoke School for the Arts in Toronto.

 

Daria LuciwVice President – Daria Luciw (Edmonton)
Daria Luciw is a member of the National Board of Directors for the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and President of the Alberta Provincial Council of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. Daria brings much community and non-profit sector experience to the UCC. She has dedicated her career to working in and for the non-profit sector and is currently President of The DL Group Inc., an Edmonton based consulting company which provides consulting and training services on Non-Profit Management, Governance and Fund Development. She has also been an instructor at Grant MacEwan College in the Voluntary Sector Management Program which trains mature students to work in the non-profit sector.

Daria has always been active in the Ukrainian community with numerous organizations and in several leadership roles. With the UCC Alberta Provincial Council, Daria was Vice-President prior to taking on the role of President; she lead a team in developing and implementing – in 2 weeks - a successful series of events with major media coverage in Edmonton to raise funds to support election observers going to Ukraine in December 2004. Other community involvement has been with CYMK, Ukrainian Parents for Bilingual Education, Plast, several cultural and educational organizations including President of the Dnipro Choir and a member of the production team of several major stage productions. Daria is a graduate of the University of Alberta in Political Science and has 4 children, all of whom are active within several community organizations.

 

Demyan HyworonTreasurer – Demyan Hyworon (Winnipeg)
Demyan Hyworon (B. Sc.) has over 14 years experience in the software industry. As Vice-President, Technology & Product Support for an internet software company, InfoTech Inc., Demyan has traveled extensively in support of a global client base.  Demyan is also Vice-President of DAAD Holdings, a Winnipeg-based real estate company with over 15 commercial properties.  Demyan’s community involvement includes: board member of the national executive of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (2 years), board member of Oseredok (9 years), board member of the Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions of Canada (3 years) and active member of St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Church.  He served as a member of the Canadian Election Observer Mission for the Presidential Elections in December 2004.  A member of Carpathia Credit Union for 30 years, Demyan currently is on the board of Directors and serves on the audit committee & HR committee as well as on the Wasyl Topolnicky Memorial Foundation. Demyan Hyworon is the son of Eugene and Zorianna Hyworon.

 

Serhiy KasyanchukSecretary – Serhiy Kasyanchuk (Toronto)
Serhiy was born and raised in Lviv where he completed a degree in Economic Cybernetics at the Lviv State University.

In 1992, Serhiy achieved a Master of Political Sciences degree at the Ukrainian Free University in Munich.

In Ukraine, he worked at the Institute of Management "Lviv", the Lviv State University and at the Business Support Centre NewBizNet.

After immigrating to Canada Canada, Serhiy worked as a financial analyst at CIBC and currently is employed at Buduchnist Credit Union.

He is president of the Toronto branch of the League of Ukrainian Canadians and is a member of Board of Directors of the UCC Toronto Branch where he also serves as head of its Community Development Committee.

Serhiy is married and the father of two children.

 

Member at Large - Halyna Holowka (Montreal)
Halyna Holowka is a member of the National Board of Directors for the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. Halyna is actively involved in the Ukrainian community and over the years has served on several boards and numerous committees. Currently she is a board member of the Ukrainian World Congress, the Ukrainian Youth Association SUM – World Executive, the Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada and the Vice-President of the Montreal Branch.

Halyna is a chartered accountant and partner of Tretiak Holowka Inc., Chartered Accountants serving small to medium size businesses in the provinces of Québec and Ontario. Besides working hard in her professional practice and community roles, Halyna (with the aid of her husband, of course!) has raised three active young community leaders. Travelling, enjoying the world, family and friends is her pastime: doing more of it, is a dream for the future.
