Alexa Komarnycky – Athlete on the Canadian Olympic Team (Swimming)


Born: 05/10/1989 in Etobicoke, ON.
After qualifying for the 2012 Canadian Olympic Team at the 2012 Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials in the 800m freestyle, Alexa Komarnycky made her second appearance at the Olympic Games. On August 2, Alexa competed in the third heat of the 800 freestyle in the Aquatic Centre. She placed 3 rd in the heat and finish 11th overall in this race. Her time was 8 min 28.11 sec.
In 2011, Komarnycky had a top-10 finish in the 400m medley at the World Championships in Shanghai. This was after a busy 2010 year that saw her earn top-10 results at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi  in the 400m IM, 400m freestyle, and the 800m freestyle,. That year she also competed in the Pan Pacific Championships and placed sixth in the 400m IM and seventh in the 400m freestyle.
At the World Championships in 2009, Komarnycky cracked the top 16 in the women’s 400m IM. She also competed for Canada at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in the same event. Her first competition with the senior national team was at the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria, BC.

Alexa started swimming lessons at the Etobicoke Olympium pool and later joined the Etobicoke Swimming Club with Kevin Thorburn as her coach. She moved to Victoria, B.C. after the Beijing 2008 Games to train with elite coach Randy Bennett.

Career Highlights: Won her 1st national title in the 400-metre IM at the 2004 Canadian Open Short Course National Championships
